Dismal performance in World Cup has taken a toll on not only the players but also the coaches. After resignation of Greg Chappell, England coach Duncan Fletcher has also decided to resign from the post as England coach. Though, this was expected as England was unable to enter into the semi-finals but there was some suggestion in the media that he can continue especially in test matches.
Fletcher quoted in a statement,
I feel it is in the team’s best interests over the long-term that I should move on. Earlier in the World Cup I came to a decision about my future and I discussed stepping down as head coach with the ECB prior to England’s game against Bangladesh. This has been a difficult winter for the team and for me personally, but I believe that my record as coach over the past eight years is one in which I can take great pride.
Fletcher has had a mixed tenure as an England coach. Under Fletcher’s guidance England defeated Australia in the Ashes after a long gap as well as won the one-day series in Australia. England also attained the coveted number 2 position in the ICC test ranking under Fletcher. But on the other hand, they were whitewashed 5-0 in the recently concluded Ashes Series and England also struggled in one-day cricket under his reign of late.
